quelques commentaires

-Soit vous envoyez vos travaux sur ma mail box: benaoudaa@gmail.com en pièce jointe (Word, PDF, RTF...);
-Soit vous rédigez directement sur la page de votre mail box et vous l'envoyez comme si vous écriviez un message normal;

A mes étudiants:

Relative clause

It is important to distinguish between defining and non-defining relative clauses.

Defining relative clauses are an essential part of the meaning of a sentence and therefore they cannot be left out. They define exactly who or what we are talking about.
Ex: There’s the woman you where telling me about.

Non-defining relative clauses add extra information of secondary importance and can be left out of a sentence.
Ex: Mrs Hamouda, who was an extremely mean person while he was alive, has left all his money to a neighbour.

*Non-defining relative clauses are mainly found in written English, where sentence are carefully constructed. In spoken English, they sound rather normal and can easily be expressed by simple sentences.

Defining relative clauses

Here are the main forms used. The forms in brackets are possible but not as common.
Person thing
Subject Who (that) That (which)
Object --- (that) --- (that)

Notice that English has given the choice to put “that” or to omit it when the object of the clause id defined. It likes to drop it.

Ex: The doctor who helped me most was Dr. Brahmia (subject).
• The doctor I found most helpful was Dr. brahmia (object).
• The treatment I liked best was acupuncture (object).
• The treatment that helped me most was acupuncture (subject).

Notice that there are no commas before and after defining relative clauses when written and no pauses when spoken.
That is usually used after the following superlatives: all, every (thing), some (thing), any (thing), no (thing), and only.

Ex: he wrote some of the best poetry that’s ever been written.
All that’s needed is a little more time.
Don’t take anything that’s valuable.
The only thing that matters is that you are safe

• Prepositions can come either before relative pronouns or at the end of the relative clause. In spoken English, it is much more common to put the preposition at the end (and to drop the pronoun).

Ex: This is the book I was talking to you about.
The people I worked with are very kind.

A second relative introduction by and /or but usually takes a wh pronoun, not that.
Ex: Someone that I greatly admire, but who I’ve never met, is professor hellal.

Non-defining relative clauses
Here are the main forms used. The form in brackets is possible but not as common.
Person thing
Subject , who…, , which…,
Object , who…, (, whom…,) , which…,

Ex: Mr. Boudjedra, who has written several books, spoke at the meeting last night. (subject).
Ahmed Ouyahia, who Prime Minister, has become the leader of the RND Political party. (object).
My favourite dish is Couscous, which is the Algeria’s famous traditional dish. (subject).
I gave him a sandwich, which he ate greedily. (object).

Notice
that unlike defining relative clauses, non-defining relative clauses are separated from their noun by commas. The pronoun can never be omitted in a non-defining relative clause. The construction is more common in written then in spoken English.

Seven Writing Myths

Here are seven non-rules imposed on writers that can be safely discarded:

(1) You must not start a sentence with ‘but’, ‘so’, ‘because’, ‘and’, and ‘however’.

(2) You must not put a comma before ‘and’. A comma before ‘and’ may, in fact, help the reader to see how the sentence is constructed, or put a pause exactly where you want it.

(3) You must not end a sentence with a preposition.

(4) You must not split your infinitives - If you think a sentence will be more emphatic, clear or rhythmical, split your infinitive – there is no reason in logic or grammar for avoiding it.

(5) You must not write a one-sentence paragraph. If you can say what you want to say in a single sentence that lacks a direct connection with any other sentence, just stop there and go on to a new paragraph; there’s no rule against it.

(6) You should write as you speak.

(7) You should test your writing with a readability formula.

Letter writing

In letters, avoid fusty first sentences and formula finishes.

Your first sentence should be clear, complete, concise, and written in modern English. Steer clear of these 3 traps.

(1) Avoid writing half a sentence instead of a full one – Your first sentence should be com-plete.

Compare:

1. Further to your letter of 3 February concerning the trustees of the P F Ali 1982 Settlement.
2. Further to your letter of 3 February concerning the trustees of the P F Ali 1982 Settlement, I am pleased to enclose the form you requested.

(2) Avoid repeating the heading – If your letter has a heading don’t keep referring to it.

Compare:

1.

Dear Ms Ammar

‘The Tree House’, 67 Benm’hidi Avenue, Poplar

I refer to your enquiry yesterday in relation to the above-mentioned property, and enclose details as requested.
2.

Dear Ms Ammar

‘The Tree House’, 67 Benm’hidi Avenue, Poplar

Thank you for your enquiry yesterday about this property; details are enclosed.

(3) Avoid such fusty phrases as:

* Our recent telephone discussion refers.
* Re your letter of the 10th, the contents of which have been noted.

Keep the finish simple, warm, and sincere:

Example:

* I look forward to receiving your application soon.
* I hope you will understand our position and I regret that we cannot help any further.

Understood words

Use words your readers are likely to understand

Seek out unusual words or phrases and replace them with plainer alternatives. For example, compare the officialese in the first statement with the clarity of the second.

1. In the event of your being evicted from your dwelling as a result of wilfully failing to pay your rent, the council may take the view that you have rendered yourself intentionally homeless and as such it would not be obliged to offer you alternative housing.
2. If you are evicted from your home because you deliberately fail to pay your rent, the council may decide that you have made yourself intentionally homeless. If this happens, the council does not need to offer you alternative permanent housing.

If you overuse the words in the left-hand column of the table, your writing could be perceived as pompous, officious, and long-winded.

Official Terms Plainer Alternatives
accordingly so
concerning about
due to the fact that as, because
for the purpose of to
interim (noun) meantime
nonetheless even so, however, yet
polemical controversial
supplementary extra, more
with regard to about, concerning

Keep sentences short

Over the whole document, make average sentence length 15 to 20 words. Muddle is more likely in a long sentence unless the construction is simple and well-organized. Learning to cut repetition and verbiage, using lists and headings properly, and shortening sentences can make the world of difference to your writing.

For example:

(1) Split and disconnect – Full stops enable readers to digest your latest point and prepare for the next.

Compare these two statements:

1. I understand that some doctors making night calls have been attacked in recent months on the expectation that they were carrying drugs and their caution when visiting certain areas in the south of the city has been very exacting and has even included telephoning the address to be visited from their car when they arrive outside the house.

2. I understand that some doctors making night calls have been attacked in recent months on the expectation that they were carrying drugs. Their caution when visiting certain areas in the south of the city has been very exacting. It has even included telephoning the address to be visited from their car when they arrive outside the house.

(2) Say less – Sometimes a sentence is lengthened by needless repetition.

Compare these two letters:

1. Dear Sirs

Trial of John Smith and James Jackson

Trade Descriptions Act 1968, Manchester Crown Court, 10.30 a.m.

Tuesday 7 June 2000

The above defendants are to be tried at Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday 7 June 2000 at 10.30 a.m. for several offences under the Trade Descriptions Act 1968 concerning the supply of motor vehicles to which false trade descriptions had been applied.
